How do teeth become discolored?

Yellowing of your teeth may make you feel self-conscious about the way you look. If you find yourself covering your mouth with your hand when you laugh or smiling with your mouth closed, you may be looking for a solution to your discolored teeth.

Discoloration can occur for a number of reasons including age, diet, and behaviors like smoking. Certain medications may also contribute to the discoloration of your teeth.

Teeth whitening at Coolbreeze Dentistry removes unsightly stains from the surface of your teeth. You can also keep your teeth white and bright by abstaining from certain foods and beverages. Foods likely to stain your teeth include:

  • Berries
  • Coffee and tea
  • Wine
  • Soda

If you have a glass of wine or soda with dinner, you may want to rinse your mouth with water after drinking. Rinsing can reduce the risk of tooth decay and discoloration. Tobacco use, such as smoking or using chewing tobacco, can also stain your teeth. Dr. Kainth may recommend that you quit smoking and/or chewing in order to improve your smile's appearance.

A thorough dental hygiene routine will also help to keep your smile sparkling. You can reduce the risk of stains by brushing and flossing twice daily.
